iMac Won't Turn On At All

I'm not an Apple user by any measure, however my office has this one iMac M3.

This iMac M3 has not been turned on for probably a month, however the iMac is unable to turn on now. Between that month, there is a few days where my office had multiple rapid power surge/outages because of faulty breakers. The iMac has never been turned on in during those surges/outages, however the plug has never been disconnected from the wall.

While I have absolutely no knowledge of iMac troubleshooting, I have tried everything that forums have said (power cycle, safe mode, etc.) yet it still won't turn on at all. The power button still clicks fine, so I'm thinking that the power adapter that also houses the ethernet port is fried. Are there any other possibilities I should know of before telling my boss about the possible issues and fixes?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Hi!

Well as long as you did all the resets and still no sign of life, did you check the power supply?? It's most likely that the power supply is broken. Could also be a problem with the motherboard!

But, It's introduced in November 2023, right? So I guess you still have warranty on it... I would return it and get yourself a new one.

Well, doing all the resets, moving between power strips and wall outlets, checking the buttons, and even the classic "rapid pressing of power button hoping it would just work" doesn't seem to work at all. With my knowledge of troubleshooting non-Apple PCs, power supply/adapter is my major suspect considering that was the part that was connected to AC power.

The iMac did arrive at my office on exactly March 28, which only is 1 and a half months ago. I will go tell my boss to go through with the warranty claim and I hope that it will go smoothly as I and a few others who worked in the same room as I do legitimately only got permission to actually use this iMac a few moments before I posted on this forum. Nobody in my office, not even me, realized that it was actually dead for the last 2 weeks (since the surges) as we just don't have permission to use it.

Hmm, yeah it's probably the Power Supply just as Dan stated! Well, just better to tell him to let it be fixed under warranty, now it's still there! Good luck :)!

Even though the iMac wasn't turned on the power supply (which is external) likely got hit from the surges.

So as koppie007 stated you should visit the store where you got the system and make sure to bring the power unit as well. Don't offer any details of the power event just simply say the system won't turn on now. Let the tech discover the issue. Most likely they will just give you a new power unit and call it a day.

Now you do need to make some corrections to your power service! I would get an electrician in to install a building wide surge suppressor which is a very easy device to install at your building/office breaker panel. In addition you should install discrete power strips with a fused switch so you can quickly isolate your equipment (all sensitive gear).

Honestly, about my building's power service, I'm not sure my boss is willing to since my building is part of a row of warehouse buildings that my boss just use the front part as an office. They apparently also have a plan to move to a nearby building that's currently under construction so there will be no other plans to the current building. It's a small office anyway, which is why I did tell them to at least add some UPS just in case. All their other PCs are old in terms of specs and very cheap, which is probably why they don't really care much about power safety for their PCs.

@stormzzy - I love UPS's! In my home I have four! As our power in our neighborhood is not that good😖

Let us know what the Store tech tells you and hopefully you get it fixed for free!
