I have the "Black Screen of Death"

My question is does anyone think the black screen of death could be related to the discharege of the battery. I stopped using my oculus for about a month and left it not charging for that time when I turned it on it was super slow and when I updated it thats when it stopped showing things on the screen. The only things I could see was the boot logo/animation and boot menu if i held the button down, I since tried fixing it as a software issue to no avail and left it alone discharged again when I plugged it in again it blinked red and I believe its charging now. But now I cant see anything but the LCD lighting up and I feel like its due to the battery I had 0 issues before leaving it alone for so long.

Update at 8% I was able to see the charging animation while off I tried booting and saw the logo but cant see the setup screen*

  • I am on the setup screen because the r/oculusquest2 community and meta support told me to factory reset which kinda screwed me over cause now i cant enable USB debugging again as I cant see the screen

Update 2 I was able to get it connected to my phone and get it to cast its screen so im progressing though the setup screen

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hey Dylan, It's definitely possible that the black screen of death on your Oculus Quest 2 is related to the battery discharge. Here's why:

  • Lithium-ion batteries: The Quest 2 uses a Lithium-ion battery, which can degrade if left completely drained for extended periods. This can lead to reduced capacity or even complete failure.
  • Slow performance: Your experience of the Oculus being slow before the update aligns with a potential battery issue. A weak battery can cause performance issues in electronic devices.
  • Red blinking light: The red blinking light usually indicates a critical battery level that requires charging.

The good news is that you seem to be making progress! Here are some takeaways from your update:

  • Charging animation: Seeing the charging animation is a positive sign, indicating the battery is receiving power.
  • Boot logo: Seeing the boot logo suggests the headset can still go through the initial startup process.
  • Casting to phone: Being able to cast the screen to your phone is a great workaround to navigate the setup process despite the black screen.

Here are some suggestions moving forward:

  • Continue charging: Let the Quest 2 fully charge (usually indicated by a solid green light).
  • Complete setup through casting: Since you can cast the screen, use your phone to guide you through the remaining setup steps.
  • Contact Meta Support: If you are still under your warranty, contact Meta Support https://www.meta.com/help/support/ for possible replacement.
