The iPod Seventh Generation, marketed and sold as the "iPod Classic", was released in September 2009, and did not have any visible differences compared to the previous version. It simply replaced the previous 120GB iPod Classic 6.5 with a thin 160GB version.

If I remember correctly, this gen iPod still had a mechanical hard drive inside.

If it is able to initiate a sync, but does it very slowly then that could be a sign that the internal storage is on the way out. Fixing it is possible, but would require a teardown that isn't for the faint of heart.
