Smart Cover Magnets on the new iPad

History

Was wondering if the magnet configuration on the new iPad is the same as the one in iPad 2. My keyboard case features a smart cover and is supposed to sleep/wake the iPad when the keyboar case is opened or closed but it no longer does that with the iPad. Any insight as to why it might not work anymore? Thanks!

No, they are not the same. I have the Otterbox for the New iPad and while the magnets worked on my iPad 2, they do not for the new one. I have flipped the magnets over to change polarity and just like that it works perfectly now.

Apple has switched to using a different type of sleep/wake sensor in the new iPad 3. This new sensor is sensitive to magnetic polarity (the sensor in the iPad 2 is NOT sensitive to polarity). I have proven this in an HD video demonstration at my blog:

If you get a third-party case with a magnet in the cover that has the needed polarity facing the wrong direction, that case will work properly with the iPad 2 but it will NOT work properly with the iPad 3.

Obviously, manufacturers were not aware that Apple would be using a new and different sensor in the iPad 3. Thanks to my blog post, the word is quickly spreading and manufacturers will be fixing their cases accordingly.

if your case doesn't perform sleep/wake: Take a small piece of a thicker refrigerator magnet and test it. If it works, glue it to the inside right edge of outer flap, about 2 1/2 inches from the top of your ipad 2 case. A 1 inch by 1/2 inch size or smaller works best, but too small or too thin (ie magnets on back of business cards) may not have enough magnetism.
