Hi Dawn,

It sounds like your battery is very close to being dead. It probably has just enough charge in it to light up the dash when you turn on the key, but once you try and start it, the extra power needed to crank the starter is sucking out what little juice remains in the battery and shuts everything down. After a while the battery can sometimes recover to a small extent and let you turn the bike on again, but without adding more charge to the battery, the same thing is going to happen again.

I'd suggest you take the battery out, charge it, then take it to an auto parts store and have it tested. I suspect you'll find it's no longer holding a charge and may need to be replaced.

If, on the other hand, it tests good after being charged, come on back and let us know and we'll figure out what the next thing to check is. I'm personally pretty good with mechanics, but I'm not a motorcycle mechanic by any means. I do have a brother who owns a hardtail though, so I can always hit him up if I need Harley-specific information.

By the way, what model is your Harley?
