MacBook air 13' mid 2012 dead

Hey everyone,

I have a dead MacBook Air I’m trying to troubleshoot.

It’s not turning on whatsoever. The MagSafe LED turns Green for 2 seconds then goes to Orange when I plug it in.

After reseting the SMC it does the same thing. I’ve check the inside. It seems there is traces of melted plastic on the battery (see pics)

above some electrical part, not the lithium blocks.

I’ve tried starting the system with the battery unplugged with no luck.

My question is:

  • Could the logic board be dead?
  • Can’t the battery be functional even with this dent in it?
  • Should this system turn on without a battery?

Thanks for your expertise!

Answer this question I have this problem too

So far you’ve discovered the batteries logic board blowup! Thats part of the battery assembly so replacing of the battery is what’s needed just looking at this.

To test the rest of the system all you need to do is disconnect the battery, then with nothing connected press the power button to finish discharging the logic board. Then plug in the MagSafe charger. Your system should spontaneously startup. If it does the rest of the system should be OK.

Here’s the needed part: MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010-2017) Battery and here’s the guide MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Battery Replacement

Hi Dan. Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I did as you suggested. I Cleaned the magsafe port as well. Unfortunately, the situation is still the same. SMC works, but no sign of life. Does that mean the LogicBoard is gone as well? thanks again!

Take out the logic board and inspect it for damage or corrosion.
