Can I make my own carpet shampoo?

A few years back I was moving into this rental house. The landlord gave me the keys early but said that the carpet guys had not been there yet to clean the carpet and to leave the Tide Laundry Detergent in the middle of the living room. I guess they used this to clean the carpets and gave him a discount for providing the soap. I’ve tried it with mine at home and had great results. The key is to put the soap in after the water so it doesn’t suds up.
