Why is my controller not being recognized when I plugged it in?
I plug my controller in but the console does not recognize that it is connected.
Is this a good question?

I simply unhooked the controller, blew into the connector then plugged it in again and it worked.

The Gamecube may not recognize your controller because of a faulty connection with the cube and the wire. As mentioned above, blowing into the connection piece of the controller may alleviate your problems; however this will probably only be temporary. Have you tried to connect the controller to different ports? If it doesn't work in any port, the problem is with your controller wire. If it does work in the other ports, the problem is you have a faulty port, in which case I recommend you check out gamecube repair guides. If it is a faulty cable you may want to invest in a new controller.
