My iBook g4 freezes soon after start up.

Have you tried booting it from the OS installation CD? If you can do that, you should open Disk Utility from the disc and run it against the harddrive. It could be that the drive is dying.

listen to the harddrive

if it sounds normal try archiving and installing and see if that helps
