Display flashes colors, external display works normally.

The Mac boots up normally, you just can't see anything on the built in display. While it boots, the screen flickers difference colors and lines. After log in, the display just flashes different colors when displays are mirrored:

Do you think this is a logic board/gpu issue or is it more likely a display or display cable issue?

if you hook up an external display and it functions normally, you have effectively eliminated the gpu as the cause of the problem. Now on to the LVDS cable or the LCD itself. Good Luck!!
