Why does my iPhone 3G have a black screen?

Ok so i took my iphone out of my pocket and its a gray screen. It is responceive i just cant see anything. why??

Try a hard restart hold power and home button togeather at same time for 7 seconds then let go of home and keep pressing power..

If that doesn't work it's possible the phone could have been squeezed in pocket and suffered damaged lcd
