I took off the cover to fix a leaky steam wand and clean the machine. I adjusted the steam wand and put the cover back on. Now when I press the power button, the pump comes on. Pressing the coffee cup button (which usually turns on the pump) does nothing. I didn't touch any of the wiring. What do I need to do the get the On Button to simply turn on the machine?

Try readjusting the steam wand, and take a good look inside and make sure that the wand is seated properly and that there are no wires.
Also it may be set to only turn on if it is at a certain angle or hooked up to a proximity switch.

Good thoughts. No proximity switch; strictly a power button issue. I replaced the "brew coffee" switch with no success - the pump still comes on when power is turned on. Also re-seated the wand and hand piece receptacle. Still no love. Other thoughts?
Aside from taking the base apart or wherever the power button is to check for connectivity or shorts I am not really sure...

It sounds like you didn't correctly reinstall the steam knob. When turned it should activate a switch, turning on the pump, but it should not be activating the pump in it's resting / off position. You'll need to take the top off again and readjust the position of the knob on the shaft via the hex head nut.

I have a similar issue with a Barista I just bought; as soon as the machine is turned on, the pump is activated and water flows to the brewhead. The only way to disengage the pump is to activate the steam button. The coffee brew button seems to have no impact whatsoever on the pump and on whether water is flowing to the brewhead. In other words, if power is on + coffee button off + steam button off = pump activated and there is water flow to the brewhead or (if the steam knob is open) water to the steam wand. Conversely, if the power is on + steam button on = no pump activated (no water flow to brewhead, but I can get steam from the steamwand if preheated light is on). I can get water from the steamwand if I disengage the steam button and rotate the steam knob, but otherwise hot water is coming out of the brewhead until I turn it off by turning on the steam button. It's really weird.
I have replaced both the steam button and the coffee brew button, and descaled the machine, checked connections, to no avail. The machine is very clean on the inside and there doesn't seem to be any corrosion at all.
If I better understood the electrical system, I might have a better feel for what is going on. Obviously there is something that has been inadvertently hardwired that is causing the brew switch to no longer function as it should as an interruption between the pump and the electricity. Is there a relay of some sort that could get fried that would cause this to happen? I've traced the wires from the brew switch. The red one runs to the power switch, while the purple one seems to run through a series of multi-connectors running to what appears to be some sort of sensor the steam knob. Since it shuts off when the steam button is engaged, I suspect that sensor is working... so perhaps it is some sort of power button issue. I will let you know what I find out....

Eric, when the steam knob is turned it engages a switch that starts the pump in order to dispense water from the steam wand. If the steam button is engaged it disables this switch, as the pump shouldn't run while in steam mode. I would double-check that you have the steam knob correctly installed as that's the most likely reason the pump runs as soon as the machine is turned on. Inside the machine there is a black piece on the steam shaft that can be adjusted with a #2 hex bit; it should be positioned so that it engages the switch as soon as the steam knob starts to turn (to the open position).
May Barista is doing exactly the same thing! When the steam switch is depressed in (steam knob open) the pump shuts off, when unit is simply turned on (while steam knob closed) the pump starts up. The switch is working exactly opposite of the way it should be. I am operating the unit with the cover off for the time being so I can manually override the steam switch by placing shim between steam knob shaft and switch (I removed the black plastic piece on the steam knob shaft) when power button is turned on and steam knob is off (so pump stays off). I'd purchased this 2nd hand...initially had problems in that could not get coffee out of the brew head (and steam knob worked properly at that time. I'd removed and cleaned the pump and removed the boiler and checked fittings and flushed it. Saw pictorial on-line of pump components and realized pump was missing a check ball...so removed again, added this check ball. Brew head works fine now but the steam knob issue began after removing the boiler. A puzzle to me...

It sounds like you've got something wired wrong. The steam knob switch should turn the pump on when depressed, otherwise the pump should only run when the brew button is depressed. Thank you so much for the wiring diagram! It helped me go through the tangle and I came to realize there are two male plugs at the base of the steam wand switch (that is activated by opening the steam wand knob) and I'd inadvertently plugged a female end into the wrong male end...working normally now!
