Poor Signal on Several Networks?

Hi there folks.

I'll start by saying I live in Australia, I don't think this will make a difference. I was given a second-hand unlocked iPhone 4 16GB, the problem is that the network reception fluctuates between SOS Only, Searching.., one Bar and sometimes three but never stays put for more than 10 minutes even if I leave the phone in the same spot not moving it. I have been able to send a few texts and make a call or two on one bar but that's it. I have tried this across three different SIM cards (Vodafone, Optus & Telstra) all with the exact same result. If I go to Carriers and turn Automatic to off, it says searching but doesn't find a single carrier then five minutes later it'll find one for a little bit.. I have tried resetting it via iTunes and the iPhone itself, no luck with that..

The Silent switch and "Volume Up" button doesn't work also, but this is not important at the moment. It might be relevant, I don't know. The guy at my local repair shop said it all looks normal (I asked him not to worry about the volume for now) but I don't really trust his knowledge as I have never been there before.

The battery is draining pretty quickly, nothing major and it may be due to the constant searching but could a dying battery be the cause? I just really need pointing in the right direction.

Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot.

I ended up removing the blue inductor (I believe it was faulty) and soldered between the two points. Works perfect now!
