Will it power up without the hard drive in?

I bought a used Apple iBook that does not have a hard drive. It will not power up even though I have the battery and a new adpater.

The iBook should power up showing a grey screen with a folder and question mark.

Thanks for the answer. It does not light up although I have voltage on the other side of the dc in and at the battery contacts. any thoughts. I have a new ac adapter.

You mean you checked the voltage at the DC in board cable end (black connector) that connect to the logic board ?

Macs require an operating system to power up. You can confirm your computer is ok by booting with a operating system disk in the optical drive. If it boots you should be good to go after you install a hard drive and the OS on the drive. Ralph
