Microphone not working ONLY on video recording DX HELP!
I'm pretty confused and somewhat dismayed. I have just repaired my friend's mom's screen on her broken iPhone 4S. The screen works beautifully, can make calls and receive calls, and hear the microphone on both ends. Voice memos work. Now, the problem is, as I am about to give the phone back to my friend to give to his mom, it is not fully working. The microphone does not work properly when recording a video. I have searched and searched and searched for a solution or a similar problem as to this, nothing. The dismaying part is that I am going to be assertive and tell him what is wrong with it, and not leave it unfinished. Without a solution, I am very upset with my work as I try to handle something like this in the most professional manner. I am very very confused and would really like some advice, I don't even know which microphone to replace, or if it even is a microphone?? it shouldn't be because the microphone works! Someone, with experience please respond! is there an ifixit phone number I can call?

I am having the same problem with mine. When i took mine apart, I think I broke the headphone jack assembly. It also includes a secondary mic for noise reduction. I'm assuming this is the same one used for speakerphone calls and video, which both don't work on my phone anymore. I just ordered it. Hope this helps!
Thank you mike, I appreciate your answer. I have a similar malfunction with a white 4 cdma, where the voice memo works but not the video recording. I purchased a new headphone jack/microphone already and am going to test it out now. I'll update you on the results. Its a real PITA to get that top right screw out i tell ya..

This is such a common problem, but there are two opposite symptom sets. One is that the mic does not work with the phone, Skype, and memo, and the other is that it does not work with video or speakerphone.
I experienced the second after replacing a bad power switch assembly. I went back in to replace a bad home switch and I tried the common youtoob fixes which are clean the small mic hole next to the headphone jack and the extra cardboard to put pressure on the motherboard audio chip, neither of which worked for me.
A search yields info that this is a known problem with the audio chip on the motherboard, which ifixit notes in other answers. The chip loses some PCB connections, and the probability goes towards losing phone mic. We went in and fixed our phone problems, just like apple repair would, and disturbed the mo-board enough to disturb the chip. But we don't have replacement motherboards to pop in like they do if the mic does not work, or probably with every fix because of the high probability of the chip problem. That's my opinion as a 25 year audio tech.
There is a utoob video showing someone re-working the chip, but that's too deep for me.
Mike, did the new headphone jack sort your problem?

Just to make sure, the headphone jack they have here for sale (part 821-1336-A) is the one that needs to be replaced on this situation where the phone mic works normally (for phone calls) but the mic for video recording and facetime does not work.
Just double-checking so I can purchase the right part. Tks!
