Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976 Troubleshooting

Laptop doesn't turn on ¶

If the computer simply won't turn on, there can be many sources of the problem.

Faulty Power Supply ¶

If the power supply is bad the computer will still run on battery power but will not be charged by the battery. Try using a different power supply. If the problem persists the charging port could be bad.

Faulty Charging Port ¶

If the charging port is bad the laptop will not run using the power supply and the battery will not charge. If the laptop still does not turn on with a new power supply then the port needs to be replaced.

Disconnected Hard Drive ¶

If the hard drive is not fully plugged in the computer may not boot properly. Remove the hard drive and reconnect, or replace hard drive. See Installing Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084 Hard Drive guide.

Faulty Memory ¶

If the memory in the computer is faulty the computer will try to turn on but will then immediately shut off. Try taking the memory out, cleaning it, then putting it back in. If this does not fix the problem the memory needs to be replaced. See Installing Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084 Random Access Memory (RAM) guide.

Laptop Shuts off when Unplugged ¶

As soon as the power supply is unplugged the computer shuts down.

Dead Battery ¶

If the battery is dead, the computer will run using the power supply, but will turn off when unplugged. Make sure the battery is charged fully and then try to turn on the laptop. If the laptop turns on with the power supply attached but will not boot without it then the battery needs to be replaced. See Installing Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084 Battery guide.

Blank/Black Screen ¶

Screen won't turn on? Nothing showing up on the screen? A blank or black screen can be a sign of several things malfunctioning.

Screen Damage ¶

If the screen goes bad the computer will turn on but the screen will be black. To verify that the problem is the screen connect the computer to an external monitor using either a RGB cable or an HDMI cable. If the external monitor shows what is on the computer then the graphics card is okay, but the screen needs to be replaced.

Corrupted RAM ¶

If the RAM slot is dirty or corrupted, the computer may show a blank, black screen. One fix is to replace one or both of the RAM modules in the computer.

Disconnected/Loose Ribbon Cables ¶

One possible reason for screen malfunction is that the cables that connect the screen to the motherboard, hard drive, power supply, and memory of the computer are disconnected. This is repairable if you open up the laptop and reconnect the cables.

Laptop Freezes During Use ¶

If you are working away on your laptop, and it freezes on you, don't throw it at the wall quite yet.

Overheating ¶

If the laptop is getting hot it could cause the operating system to stop. If the bottom of the laptop feels hot then check to see and feel if the fans are running. If the fans are not turning on when the computer is getting hot then they need to be replaced or cleaned. See Installing Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084 Cooling Fan guide.

Not Enough Memory ¶

If you are running too many programs, or have too many files on your computer, you may not have enough memory available. This will cause your computer to run slow and potentially freeze. You may want to consider upgrading your RAM or hard drive.

Corrupt Operating System Files ¶

If your operating system files are not installed properly or are corrupted, your laptop will freeze whenever it is trying to access this file. In order to fix this, you can uninstall all operating system files, and re-install operating system files using the operating system CD's that came with your laptop.

CD/DVD not working ¶

Is your computer not recognizing anything in your CD/DVD drive? Fret not, we have an answer for you.

Disc stuck in drive ¶

If the drive won't open take a paperclip and press the round release button next to the eject button.

CD/DVD Won't Recognize Disc ¶

If the CD drive laser goes bad it will not recognize the disc. If a disk is not recognized first try another disc. If the drive still does not recognize the presence of a disc the CD drive may need to be replaced. See Installing Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084 CD/DVD Drive guide.
