Camera Won't Turn On
No matter what you do, you can not get your camera to power on.
Power Button Not Held Down
Before diving too far into the inside of your camera, be sure that you press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds. Sometimes it takes a while for the camera to fully power on.
Drained/Defective Battery
If your camera will not turn on, the battery may need to be charged. Plug in your charging cable to the camera (be sure the charging port is clean), and leave it for at least 10 minutes. If your camera still will not turn on, your battery may need to be replaced. This can be done by following the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510 Battery Replacement guide.
The Screen is Blank
Even when the camera is on, the screen is blank or appears dark.
The Camera is Off
Be sure that the power light is on. In addition, make sure the battery is fully charged and is inserted properly.
The Lens is Closed
Make sure the lens is open.
Incorrect Settings
The settings may be the cause of the blank screen. For instructions on how to set the camera back to factory settings, visit Sony's webpage.
Faulty Display
If you have tried the above steps and your screen is still not displaying anything, it is possible that you have a bad display. In this case the display may need to be replaced. This can be done by following the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510 LCD Screen Replacement guide.
Camera Lens is Stuck
This is a common problem when the camera lens doesn’t retract from the extended position. This is usually caused by dropping the camera, a sudden powering down, or dirt getting inside of the device.
Defective Battery
Try replacing the battery and turning the camera back on.
Camera Needs to be Reset
Reset your camera back to its factory settings by holding down the power button for 15 seconds, then release. Reinsert the camera’s battery then turn it back on.
Faulty Mechanism
If you’ve tried all of the necessary steps and your camera lens is still stuck, your lens may need to be replaced. To do this, follow the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510 Lens Zoom Unit Replacement guide.
No Sound
There is no sound coming from the camera.
Muted Sound
Your sound may be muted. To unmute, go into the camera’s settings and select unmute.
Faulty Speaker
If the sound is not muted and is of reasonable volume, you may have a bad speaker. This requires replacement.
Problems with Images
Photos are not coming out as desired.
Flash Not Turned On
Hazy and dim images are most commonly due to taking pictures with no flash when it is necessary. Generally, flash is set to “auto”, however if it is not then go into the settings and manually set the flash to “on”.
Burnt-out Flash Bulb
If all flash settings have been manually turned on and it is still not working, then you may need a replacement flash bulb.

The selection button at the rear which enables commands and functions to be chosen is too sensitive and a mere touch will cause it to change any choice made. It is not stable

See the above. The control in question is at the rear and has the word "disp" above

It's the knurled button which rotates and has a small press button at the centre. Any slight touch will cause rapid uncontrolledchanges through the menus.
