Lenovo ThinkPad X140e Troubleshooting
An 11.6 inch notebook that was released December 2014. It is black and weighs about 4 pounds.
Display Won't Turn On ¶
You see that the computer is powered, however, the screen is black.
Faulty Screen ¶
Begin by moving the mouse. This is to make sure the display is not in sleep mode. You can press the Fn key to resume from sleep mode. However, if the screen is still black and unresponsive, plug the charger adapter into the laptop and press "Fn+F9". This should make the screen display brighter. If that also does not work, the screen may need to be replaced.
Display has been Disabled ¶
Check to see that the display device driver is correctly installed by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Personalize. Then, click display at the left and select Change display settings. Then, click Advanced Settings and finally the Adapter tab and Monitor tab. In both tabs, ensure that the accurate device driver name is displayed in the adapter information window. Click the Properties button. Check the Device status and make sure the device is operating correctly.
Cursor Doesn't Move ¶
You move the mouse, but the pointer doesn't move. The left and right click of the mouse do nothing.
Faulty Touchpad ¶
Go to Control Panel, Mouse and select the Synaptics tab. Click Settings, Pointing, Sensitivity and try adjusting the Palm Check and Touch Sensitivity settings. If this does not help, open the Settings menu and go to Devices (Mouse and touchpad.) Then click Additional mouse options and ensure that the touchpad is connected. If this has no affect, your laptop may have a faulty touchpad.
Not Connected ¶
Check to see that the mouse is correctly connected. To do so, open Control Panel and click Hardware and Sound, then click Mouse and finally the trackpad tab to ensure they are connected.
Keyboard Won't Work ¶
Pressing keys on the keyboard give no response. A key is stuck and pressing a key gives a different response than expected.
Damaged Key/Keyboard ¶
If the keyboard is unresponsive or a key is not working, start by turning the laptop off and on again. Once on again, check to see if the device is working correctly. You can do this by going to Control Panel and then selecting the Keyboard icon. Then select the Hardware tab. If the keyboard is fully functioning, the Device Properties pane should have a message reading, "This device is working properly." If not, see this replacement guide or have the computer serviced.
Damaged USB port ¶
If the keyboard or any other faulty equipment is externally attached via a USB port, the port may be damaged. To check, go to Control Panel and click Hardware and Sound. This is where you'll find Device Manager. If the devices are not functioning, the USB port may need replacement.
Distorted Audio ¶
Audio is unclear or is distorted.
Damaged Speakers ¶
Open Control Panel first and click Hardware and Sound. Then, under Devices and Printers click Device Manager. Click Sound, video and game controllers. Ensure that the Audio driver is correctly configured. If correctly configured, the speakers are damaged. Replace them using this guide.
Faulty Driver ¶
Distorted or unclear audio may be caused by your sound driver. Begin by navigating to Control Panel and then to System and Security. Click on System and then Device Manager. Once you have reached your Device Manager, scroll down to "Sound, video and game controllers". Open this to find your laptop's audio device. Right click on your audio device and select "Update Driver Software...". Restart your computer after updating your audio driver.
Laptop Won't Charge/Power On ¶
Laptop doesn't power on correctly or at all.
Faulty Port ¶
Check to see that the connection between the port and adapter is stable. If it is wobbly or loose, unplug the cord and remove any debris with a wooden toothpick or small instrument. If removing the debris does not help, you have a faulty port.
Damaged Charger ¶
Plug your adapter into an outlet and when the green light turns on, connect it to your laptop. If the laptop fails to gain any charge after some time, but still works when unplugged, or if the green light fails to show up on the adapter after being plugged in, you have a damaged charger.
Faulty Battery ¶
Begin by ensuring the charger is plugged in, indicated by the green light, and that it is connected to your laptop. If your laptop remains dead after being charged for some time or if it powers off immediately after being disconnected from the adapter, your battery is faulty. Replace it using this guide.
Hard Drive Issue ¶
If you tend to shut down the laptop by holding the power button as opposed to using the shut down sequence on your computer's operating system, your hard drive may get an error. In this case, your laptop won't power on but will send you an error message of some sort when attempting to turn on. You will likely have to replace your hard drive, using this guide.
