HP Pavilion 13-P110NR Troubleshooting

Short Battery Life ¶ 

The battery does not last long.

Intense Display Settings ¶ 

If your display settings are bright, your battery will lose charge quickly. To increase your battery’s life, reduce the brightness of the screen. If you are using the keyboard with the screen, simply use the brightness keys to reduce the screen’s brightness. Hold down the “fn” key and “F2” until you are satisfied with the screen’s brightness. The darker you go, the longer the battery’s life will be. If you are in tablet mode, go to the Control Panel. Click the Start menu button, then “Control Panel”. Go to display settings and reduce the screen’s brightness using the toggle. Within the control panel, you can also change the power settings to “Power Saving”. This will also increase your battery’s life.

High Performance Programs Running ¶ 

If you are using several programs, your battery will drain quickly; especially if you are using high performance programs. Sometimes after you close programs, they will continue to run in the background, draining your battery life. To fully quit these programs, start the Windows Task Manager by holding down the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys. The task manager should start automatically. Select any tasks that you are not using and click “End Tasks”. If you are using an internet browser, you can also close any tabs you are not using to reduce power usage.

Faulty Battery ¶ 

A defective battery can cause a shorter charge and sometimes no charge at all. Leaving the device or battery exposed to high temperatures for extended periods can damage the battery. Prolonged exposure to heat (for example, inside a hot car) will accelerate the deterioration of Lithium-Ion cells. If you suspect your battery is faulty, consider buying and installing a replacement. Warnings: Do not disassemble, crush, or puncture a battery; do not short the external contacts on a battery; and, do not dispose of a battery in fire or water.

Computer Running Slow ¶ 

Your computer has started to run slow.

Computer Needs a Reboot ¶ 

Having too many open apps and programs can slow down your computer and affect performance. To resolve this, restart the computer and open only the apps you need. Select start, click power, then click restart. After the computer restarts, open only the apps and programs you need. Once finished using the apps or programs, close them by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner.

Too Many Programs Running ¶ 

In Windows, search for and open Task Manager. Task Manager displays currently-running applications. Right-click an app to view more options. If you want to close an app, or if the app is listed as Not Running, click End Task to close the app. Click more detail to view additional resources such as the processes tab which shows all currently running operations and how much of the system resources are being used by each process. Stopping certain operations can help speed up the computer.

Insufficient Storage Space ¶ 

Windows uses unused space on the hard drive for different types of operations, such as caching and virtual memory. The computer might not run reliably if the free disk space drops below five percent of the total disk space. First, click the windows button in the start menu and select settings to open the setting window. Click system, then click storage tab to view how much space is available on your hard drive. If you decide that you want to free up space in your hard drive, you can start to remove unwanted applications. Click start, and then select settings. Once the setting window opens, click apps. From there you can go through your apps and uninstall them from there.

Keyboard Not Responding ¶ 

Its not working the way I want it to.

Unsuitable Keyboard Settings ¶ 

To fix the keyboard, you should first go into the settings of the computer and type in the search bar “keyboard”. After this has been done select the keyboard option and go into keyboard properties. Here you can move the repeat delay to a longer period if the keys get pressed multiple times or to a shorter period if you want the keyboard to be more sensitive to touch.

Diagnosing the Problem ¶ 

If none of the setting change the functionality of the keyboard, then you might have to revert to using the systems self assessment to make sure that your laptop is working properly. In order to do this you will have to start by turning off your computer by holding the power button for approximately 5 seconds. Now when you turn it on, press the F2 key repeatedly, about once a second, until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) screen comes up. Then go to “Components Test” and select the “Keyboard” option. The test is interactive so you will have to follow the directions, it only ends after you hit the ESC key. After it has finished, make sure to write down the results and act accordingly.

Computer Needs a Restart ¶ 

If the keyboard isn't replying and the tests aren't working, then you will need to resort to a hard reset. In order to do this you must first disconnect everything from the computer, including anything in the USB ports, audio jacks, charging ports, or Ethernet ports. Then hold down the power button for 15 seconds to turn it off and reset the device. After you have done this, reconnect the computer to only the power cable. Start the computer up and use the arrow keys to select “Regular Windows startup”. Reconnect the computer to any drives you may have had in the computer and allow it to update itself fully. If the arrow keys did not, work then press the ESC button repeatedly to see if a start up menu pops up. If it doesn’t, contact the HP Customer Support.

Laptop Won’t Boot ¶ 

Laptop displays a blank screen when powered on.

Malicious Programs Running ¶ 

If after turning on your device and entering your login information, the screen goes black and the cursor blinks, start the task manager and end any tasks run by “Run Once Wrapper” that are running. Windows should then start normally. Consider using an antivirus or malware prevention software to remove any malware that may be on the computer. Use this guide for reference.

Damaged Hard Drive ¶ 

Insure power is available when device is turned on. Check for blinking lights and listen for a fan or hard drive spinning. Then follow this guide to solve the issue. If no power is available, check for hardware problems.

Faulty Power Accessories ¶ 

If no lights are on or blinking and there is no noise coming from the device, it is likely that the battery, power cord, or AC adapter are faulty. Consider replacing the faulty equipment.

No sound ¶ 

There is no sound coming from the internal or external speakers.

Volume Settings Disabled ¶ 

Make sure that the sound is not turned off in your volume settings. This can be accessed by double-clicking the sound icon in the task bar, and selecting mixer. All of the active sound applications display. Make sure that none of the applications are muted by showing a grayed out sound bar and no symbol.

Sound Device is Disabled ¶ 

If the sound device being used is disabled, sound will not come from that device. Click the start menu and search for “device manager.” Select it. Grant permission if required.

Click the (+) plus sign next to sound, video and game controllers to expand the list of sound devices installed on the computer as there may be multiple.

Check to make sure the desired sound devices are enabled, as indicated by a down arrow displayed on the volume icon. To enable, right click on the name of the device and click enable. Do another sound test. If problems persist, continue troubleshooting.

It is also possible to right click on the device name and click properties to get detailed information about why the sound device may not be working.

The Wrong Audio Driver is Installed ¶ 

Sometimes when the sound files and settings are changed, reinstallation of the original sound drive is required.

Go to the start menu and search for recovery manager. Select it from the list. From the Welcome to the Recovery Manager, click the advanced options button to bring up the advanced options window. Then select hardware driver reinstallation, and click next in the re-installer window.

Select the audio or sound driver to reinstall, and follow the prompts for reinstallation. After selecting finish, the computer will restart. Do another sound test. If problem persists, it may be necessary to install an updated sound driver. Follow the directions for Sound Device is disabled to locate under sound, video and game controllers, and then click update driver software. Allow windows to search for updated software if prompted. After installing, restart computer.

Out of Date Firmware (BIOS) ¶ 

BIOS allows the operating system to start when the computer is turned on. Updating BIOS can resolve compatibility conflicts that can affect sound. Please see *fake link* for more information on updating BIOS. Do another sound test.
