About GPS navigators

The GPS (Global Positioning System) device receives the signals from the space satellites and calculates its location on Earth. Thus the device uses the obtained coordinates to guide the drivers to their destination.

There are three variables that affect the level of performance provided by the GPS device: receiver, processor and navigation software.

• GPS receiver is actually a dedicated machine chip responsible for receiving the signals from the satellites. Naturally, devices with more advanced GPS receiver will have the potential to provide better performance.

• Internal processor calculates the received data to allow determination of the location and runs the software. Like in a computer, higher operation speed of the processor will benefit the device and provide a better user experience.

• The navigation software includes the maps for the navigation and provides the user experience. There are several special software packages for a specific type of navigation systems: vehicle GPS, marine GPS, GPS for bike and motorcycles, etc.

User experience, memory and applications

Beyond the three basic parameters mentioned above, there additional variables that distinguish between different GPS navigators:

•The user experience is also affected by the quality of the display and the sound (screen size and quality, powerful speaker and the possibility of connecting external audio system).

•GPS devices come with internal memory that could be from about 100 mb and up to 10 GB or even more. Larger internal memory provides more storage for navigation maps and multimedia applications.
