Answer to: Why can't I get past step 4 of installing Mac OS 10.5?Well, thank you. But I got the problem resolved. The Hard drive DID work. I phoned iFixit, and a great guy named Scott helped me, but it was a bit complicated. The problem was that the computer didn't recognize the system DVD and so we had to connect my macbook pro with the DVD to the older MacBook with a firewire cable, and transfer the installation from the DVD on the MacBook Pro to the MacBook. Doing it that way, the MacBook would let me format/partition the Hard Drive, and then I was able to restore data from my timemachine external backup hard drive. I never would have been able to do it without his help on the phone walking me through it step by step. Thanks for sticking with this. Problem resolved.
