It sounds strange but over time the graphics card (typically an intel chipset) can actually melt away from the motherboard. This will eventually cause the graphics card to come away from the motherboard and the connection will be terminated. To fix this use a hairdryer or another heat emitting device and hold it over the graphics card for around 2-3 minutes. If necessary do this for longer but be warned that doing this too long can permanently damage the internals of your laptop.
