I just did the first step of loosening screen with spudger - not sure if needed or not, but I did it and some metal things popped. Then unscrewed all the screws and left them in place and propped just the back of the cover partially open. Hard drive then just came out, no need to touch the battery. Switched the ribbon connector to 1 TB SSD, screwed the cover back on and everything worked. Now cloning old drive with Macrium Reflect Free Edition. Love the tools in replacement kit for those who don’t already have a USB-3 enclosure/a full set of repair essentials. Also things organized in a box called iFixit are less likely to lose peaces or be misplaced.
