If your keyboard keys are not registering your input or the touchpad won't respond to touch, follow this troubleshooting guide.

Causes

1

For either the keyboard or touchpad, try restarting your computer. Press and hold down the power button until the laptop turns off, then power it back on.

2

Some updates may come with new keyboard drivers that can fix the keyboard or touchpad's nonresponsive problem. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Click the Check for Update button. Make any necessary updates and see if that works.

3

You could have the wrong drivers which can cause the keyboard/touchpad to not work. To reinstall the drivers follow the steps down below.

  1. Press the Windows key + X or in the search bar on the bottom left corner search and select Device Manager.
  2. Select Keyboard or trackpad devices (Depending on which one isn't working).
  3. Right-click and select Uninstall Device.
  4. Restart the laptop. This will reinstall the drivers.
4

If you reinstalled the drivers and it still didn't work then check to see if the laptop needs any driver updates.

  1. Go to https://support.lenovo.com.
  2. Select Detect Product > Drivers & Software > Scan Now (under Automatic Update).
5

If you see no physical damage, check for debris. It’s very common for the keyboard or trackpad to get dirty over time. Unplug, power off the laptop, and use compressed air to remove the debris.

6

1.   Immediately unplug the AC adapter (if in use) and power off the laptop.

2.   If it’s still not turning off, remove the battery.

3.   Do not turn the laptop back on until certain that all the liquid is dry.

Note: The quicker you do this, the less damage there will be. There could be irreparable damage, so a new keyboard might be necessary. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to replace the keyboard.

7

1.   Go to Settings (Windows key + I or Windows key + S)

2.   Type and select Turn the trackpad on or off.

3.   If it is off, use the spacebar to toggle it on.

8

1.   With the search icon type and open Touchpad Settings.

2.   Scroll down to touchpad sensitivity and adjust the sensitivity.

9

1.   With the search type and open Control Panel.

2.   Select Mouse > ThinkPad tab > Select Advanced Setting.

3.   Adjust the PalmTracking and SmartArea as needed.

4.   Apply changes.

If all possible solutions above do not work, you might need a new keyboard. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to replace your keyboard on a Lenovo ThinkPad P50s.
