Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 Produces Unusual Sounds

If your Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 makes unusual noises after extended use and begins to overheat, follow this page for solutions.

Causes

1
Caution

Due to the sensitive nature of electronic components, be sure to wear an electro magnetic wrist band or ground yourself by touching metal to avoid electrostatic discharge. Electrostatic discharge can fry your motherboard and make your computer not turn on.

2

Before you begin, power off the computer. Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the M2 × 5 mm spring-loaded screws. Then, use the blue opening pick along the edges to gently release the clips and lift off the bottom cover. If the fan is dusty, clean it with compressed air, blowing through both the fan and the CPU vent. If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, remove the fan and replace it.

3

On the fan, unscrew the 2 black M2 x 6 mm screws and the silver M2 x 8mm screw. Partially remove the fan by lifting it slightly towards you so it is removed from the computer. Then remove the cable by using a tweezer or two fingers. Connect the new fan’s cable to the motherboard and align it, then screw the spring-loaded screws back in.
