Causes
- The battery is housed inside the laptop, beneath the bottom cover. To access it, power off the laptop, unplug the charger, and remove any connected devices.
- Disconnect the battery and try powering on the Latitude 5289 with the charger. If it works, the battery is likely bad.
- Check the battery for swelling, leaks, or age. Bulging can lift the keyboard or touchpad.
- Reset the battery by holding the power button for 15–20 seconds with the charger and battery unplugged.
- Replace the battery if issues persist or if it’s several years old. Battery degradation is inevitable.
- Inspect the charging port closely with a flashlight. Check for dust, corrosion, or liquid residue inside the USB-C or barrel connector.
- Gently wiggle the charging cable to see if the connection improves. A loose or inconsistent charge indicates a failing port.
- Look for burn marks, bent pins, or cracked plastic around the connector.
- If damage is visible, open the laptop to inspect the DC jack. Replace it if modular, or have it professionally repaired if it’s soldered onto the motherboard (common for USB-C ports).
