My Problem

The machine only had 1 GB Ram installed

My Fix

Easy : just follow the guide step by step

My Advice

Don't worry, just take your time to follow each step.

My Problem

My white unibody macbook was having problems with the trackpad. After days of searching the internet, trying software fixes, cleaning, checking battery, etc, nothing worked. I finally decided to go for it and buy a new replacement Trackpad with screws, the #00 Phillips Screwdriver, and the Y1 Tri-wing Screwdriver. Total cost with shipping for everything was $96.00.

My Fix

It took me less than 30 minutes to remove the old trackpad, clean around it, and install the new trackpad. My old macbook now works like new - well, at least the trackpad does. Follow the MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Trackpad Replacement guide on the ifixit website, and you will have no problems. Super easy to follow and replace.

My Advice

Take your time, and move slowly. You do not want to do any more damage to your macbook.

I highly recommend buying the Phillips #00 Screwdriver and the Y1 Tri-wing Screwdriver. It is worth it to have the right tools, and you will not damage any of the screws.

Be very careful when removing the wiring ribbons connecting the battery and the trackpad. Break one of these ribbons, and your repair is over until you get a replacement.

I would recommend cleaning around the topcase where the trackpad sits before installing the new one. Dirt, lint, dust, etc trapped here will cause problems for even a brand new trackpad. I cleaned mine with a cotton swab dipped in a little rubbing alcohol.

Don't waste any time trying to repair a faulty trackpad. Just drop $100 with iFixit, and your trackpad will be working like new in 30 minutes. Super easy fix.

My Problem

mid 2009 MBP - dead in the water. A couple years ago this particular machine one day just stopped. Heard the bong, got to grey apple logo and that was it. PANIC! As I had a gigantic job deadline I literally ran out the door to the nearest Apple store and bought another one, sent my time machine backup to it and was back in business in a couple hours. Years pass. The kid has been begging me for an entree into the walled garden of Apple and I finally remember the dead machine.

My Fix

Couple of google-minutes later I surmise "it's the HDD dummy — &/or the Logic board too, but mostly maybe the HDD.

Ordered up a Crucial 256GB SSD known to work in that machine and these tools. When all had arrived, I placed iPad with the iFixit manual, machine and tools in front of him and said if you want it, fixit. And so he did. Every step was logical and clear. My 12 yr old had no difficulty executing them.

My Advice

The battery connection was the one place where he got too nervous and required help, as it was an extremely tight fit and required much patience to release. Everything else was very straight forward and he had a working laptop with an SSD (which I'd earlier cloned from another machine running Mt.Lion). All the iFixit tools performed perfectly.

My Problem

The lock button was broken and the iPod was always locked despite the position of the switch.

My Fix

It went great. The guide was very informative and made it easy. I took my time and went very slowly reading each step multiple times.

My Advice

The plastic opening tools are not very helpful. If you can get the putty knife in the case without them, you can skip that step. Also don't be afraid to be a little rough with the iPod when inserting the putty knife, as I had to and I still didn't irreversibly bend the case. Ultimately just allot a good amount of time and take your time and it should go well.

My Problem

I'd had my Mac since 2009 and never serviced the battery. It was finally starting to show and the battery life was getting worse and worse.

My Fix

I was nervous but the repair was super easy and the guide/videos made it really easy to follow. For someone who's never opened up any type of computer it was just as easy as they said it would be.

My Advice

Definitely doing this next time. I didn't want to go to the apple store because they wouldn't give me an estimate and they tend to charge just to get the estimate. No need to pay an expert to do this.

My Problem

Battery replacement

My Fix

Haven't fixed it yet, but I am working on it.

My Advice

The tools are really useful for fixing your Mac book! You can replace your battery, hard drive and many other things yourself.

My Problem

I decided to change the old 250GB hard drive with a faster 240GB SSD

My Fix

At first i had problems removing the upper case but then all the repairing procedure went well

My Advice

Following the instructions on iFixit website is simple

My Problem

My MacBook Pro was from early spring 2011... here it is 2015 and the battery was worn out. So much so, that I had to stay connected to the cord most of the time because the battery would only last a couple or three hours or so.

My Fix

I didn't want to pay the repair shops the exorbitant amounts they were asking for to replace the battery, but I was tired of the ball and chain that was my computer cord, so I bit the bullet and ordered two screwdrivers, the spudger and the battery. I don't think I really needed to order the tools... tools I had here at home might have worked (well... maybe needed the Tri-wing screwdriver). I followed the written directions step by step and it was EASY!! Thanks so much ifixit for for saving me time and money!!

My Advice

Check all the tools and save a little more money by only getting what you really need!!

My Problem

My Macbook Pro began making very loud screeching noises. It sounded as if something was rubbing against something while spinning. Looking at the picture of mac internals, I realized the noise was coming from where the fan is located. I did a hardware diagnostic test to be sure and an error code confirmed the problem was the fan. I've had the computer for 4 years, so I believe the problem was brought on by the age of the computer and dirt & dust getting caught up into it.

My Fix

I rush ordered the parts and tools which arrived promptly on time. I hadn't done anything like this and I was very nervous after reading some comments about people causing more, irreparable damage after opening up their computer. I closely followed the ifixit guide step-by-step and everything went perfectly. The hold fan was very dirty, so much so that the fan couldn't spin. Everything went smooth and the computer worked perfectly when I turned it back on, the whole process only took 20 minutes. It has been a couple weeks with no noise coming from the fan.

My Advice

Follow the guide exactly and you'll be fine. It is an easy process.

I recommend having a can of dust off or something similar to gently spray any dust and dirt out of the computer. I am planning on opening mine up again to do that because I didn't have any with me the first go around.

My Problem

The battery expanded severely causing the trackpad to pop out the the frame

My Fix

Very simple install. Directions were fantastic. Took about 15 minutes

My Advice

Look up the directions and order the tools.
