My Problem

My friend said his phone was broken, that he'd had to pick up a new one. "Broken? Broken how?" I asked him. He said he'd butchered the dock connector with an off brand charging cable. "You want it? It's f#@&ed!" "You're not going to be mad if I get it working are you?" "Ha! No, but good luck!"

My Fix

The part arrived really quickly. I love just looking closely at the new part - even the seemingly simple bits are such wonders of miniaturization, and it really does provide a moment to appreciate the wonders of engineering and technology that we carry around with us now everywhere without pausing to think about it. Once the back comes off things look even more amazing, but staying focused is good at this stage - a poorly timed sneeze could send a 1.2mm screw flying never to be seen again! For this repair i used the step by step on the ifixit app and it was great. Follow the steps, keep the screws organized, and be patient. It's sort of exciting of really, doing such major surgery, and the feeling of satisfaction when "the patient" wakes back up is the best!

My Advice

Go slow, have a good system in place for keeping your screws organized, and try not to curse Steve Jobs too harshly for all the glue on the battery - I'm sure it wasn't his decision!

Other advice: it took me a few tries to get the new dock connector piece to seat properly in the phone - not a bad idea to practice getting this in place before you remove the glue backing.
