iPhone 4 Rear Camera Replacement

Ken -

Story image

My Problem

My daughter's iPhone 4 native camera app stopped working. After some googling, it appeared that this happens when the hardware camera dies. No applecare left on this phone so off to Ebay (didn't know about iFixit at this time). Bought a replacement for $11 shipped.

My Fix

Very glad I ordered my ProTech Toolkit as the replacement camera I ordered did come with tools that the seller said would be all that's needed for my phone, however when they arrived the only thing useful were the blue plastic pry sticks. They were the same as in the toolkit I ordered from iFixIt. The screwdrivers that came with the camera were worthless. If I hadn't ordered the Pro Tech Toolkit from iFixit, I would not have been able to do this job. Also, the camera I purchased was not a new camera as described. There is a very green spot in every image taken. Working to get a refund now.

It went as well as it could. No spare parts left after reassembly and replacement camera did indeed fix the initial problem. Once the working camera was installed, even though it had a green light in it, I was still able to get to the camera software and switch it to the front camera. Now my daughter was able to at least use that side.

I was able to take it apart and replace it in under an hour. I did break the head off of one screw from tightening it a bit too much but it wasn't one that's really needed (right?)

My Advice

Be sure to get your parts from a reputable source. My $11 camera may end up costing me in shipping trying to get a working one, when $29 would have bought one on iFixIt.

Also, be careful about tightening the screws, they don't need any force to be tight.
