My Fix
Your detailed step by step guide allowed me to install a new hard drive in my 2007 imac, close it back up, and start installing the os, os upgrades, and another os upgrade, and other software...the machine is running like new! thank you so much. the upgrades too a day and a half, the HD install took about an hour.
My Advice
don't discard an old mac... go to ifixit.com and make it new again.
