My Problem

I noticed in April my iPhone 4S didn't charge when the phone was on, but it would charge when the phone was turned off. I thought the charger might be bad, but the charger worked on my iPad. I checked with AT&T, and was told I wasn't eleigible for an upgrade till December. Buying a phone now would run me $299, so I looked online and found a battery at ifixit.com for under $35. The video made replacement look simple, and it was.

But replacing the battery didn't solve my issue. I posted a question, and was told I needed to replace the docking port. Another $37 is still cheaper than $299 to AT&T, so I went for it... And MJ's ifixit video was a winner once again!

My Fix

I'm in my mid-50's, can't see tiny parts without reading glasses, and was apprehensive about opening my iPhone again. But I watched the video, and brought up the instructions on my ipad, zooming in on the photos as I went step by step. Do as the instructions tell you, and you'll be fine. The job went smoothly, and took me about 45 minutes. Be bold, and be not afraid!

My Advice

I noticed some comments about the mic on the new dock connector being protected by a piece of clear plastic... It's true. If you don't pull that plastic, you'll be re-assembling your iPhone in permanent "mute" mode. Pull the plastic, and then make sure the little rubber piece you pull from the old mic is installed correctly. (The little tube faces AWAY from the gold tinted circuit chip.)
