How to replace your iPhone 5 battery

35 minutes

Easy

My Problem

My wife had an old iPhone 5 whose battery had begun to fail. It would wink out in cold weather, refuse to hold a charge, and take forever to obtain a full charge. However, the phone had become a personal friend with thousands of photos, tunes, and schedules on it. We decided to try a new battery. And, iFixit was cheaper than the rest and had the most helpful online presence.

My Fix

Actually, just as predicted. Relatively easy if you follow the instructions for your phone model.

My Advice

Yes I do.

1. It helps if you have a magnification glass. The inside screws and connections are very small—especially for old eyes.

2. As you take out the screws for each piece, place them separately. Some are different sizes. It helps if you have a magnetic tray to place them in.

3. If you use a hair dryer on the phone backside to soften the adhesive holding down the battery, you really need to have the screws secured somewhere—even a slight wind will send the small screws flying.

4. Move slowly and easily. Check each step on the instructional videos or webpages just before doing it.

5. If you decide not to remove the cover glass's wire connections, I found it helps to leave the suction cup on the glass and hang the arm of the suction cup into a heavy but standard size coffee cup. It will hold the glass vertical at 90 degrees while you work on the battery.
