My Problem

Cracked Screen, Dying Battery! Apple wanted $900!

My Fix

A few hiccups, but got it done! I bought the screen elsewhere because ifixit was out of stock, but the display assembly replacement guide was what got me through. I also found that with the battery replacement kit from ifixit, you get all the tools you need to repair almost anything in the computer. I bought a screen replacement kit elsewhere and didn't end up needing those tools. Biggest Problem was that some of the wires got stuck under the logic board when I was putting it back in, had to take it out and put it back in several times to get all the wires on top. I also accidentally damaged one of my speakers by trying to pry up a flap that wasn't there, the speakers ports just pull straight out. Thankfully you can't hear any difference in the speaker.

My Advice

Be very careful to read how to remove connections, I accidentally broke a part of the speaker port on the logic board because I thought there was a flap like some of the other ports but it just pulled straight out. Read how to remove each component carefully!! Sometimes it's helpful to check the comments if the instructions are slightly unclear. Double check that you have everything connected as you go, I ended up leaving the mag-safe component disconnected from the logic board, so the battery wouldn't charge. Naturally I gave myself a scare, but was able to fix it by going through after the fact. But you'll save yourself some time if you go slow and double check as you go.

One note about battery replacement, the guide has you do pretty much a full tear down, it isn't necessary and more of a precaution to avoid damaging the hardware with adhesive remover or while prying the battery out. If you're willing to go slow and the adhesive is already loose, you can just remove the battery by itself by unscrewing it and disconnecting it from the logic board. But not for the faint of heart!

Overall, as long as you're careful, its super easy! It's less about difficulty and more about time and patience.

(PS: Don't lose the screws, they're very tiny. Each step I put the components and the corresponding screws in a plastic bag -- it was a life saver.)
