Doable, but beware the hard drive's volatile temperament.
My Problem
Battery had expanded enough that you could visually see it pressing on the screen.
My Fix
I had the 'luxury' of the Jimmy.
Though, even with it, it still took about 4 hours of struggling to get it open.
None of the plastic tools from an older kit even worked on this stubborn monster.
I had to get resourceful since I didn't even have a soda can like the others have suggested in place of the guitar pick spacer. So I used those store reward program car key tags instead.
Replacement battery was a bit misshapen (the corners weren't square), but with some 'gentle' smacking force, the corners were pushed in enough to allow it to be set into place.
Powered up fine, but now a new issue appears; Hard Drive errors. Fix one thing, another thing breaks. Thanks Apple Corp.
We should just replace the entire housing with a custom built one that's 1,000% easier to open.
I don't know if the ipod can take a second opening attack like that.
My Advice
Get replacement everything. Something's bound to go wrong, haha
