My Problem
I accidently left my iPhone out on the deck overnight and it RAINED!! After drying it out in a bag of rice it somewhat came to life but with a short battery life and would only charge if the phone was turned off. I had to dig some rice debris out of the docking port which made me suspect that there may have been some damage to it.
My Fix
The parts and tools arrived shortly after being ordered and I began reviewing the replacement procedures. The battery replacement seemed fairly straightforward but the docking port section caused me some major heart palpitations. So many parts and steps and warnings of "and for Gods sake, don't do this"! After several days of reviewing the steps, I finally girded my loins and set up a workstation. Fortunately, I had a lit magnifying glass from my jewelry making days which turned out to be a huge help, considering how minuscule the screws are.
There were a few times when I had the feeling of "What have I gotten myself into" but those were actually short lived. When I was removing the battery cable cover in step #5, the cover popped off and out flew the grounding clip. This clip later caused a bit of confusion as to just where it was supposed to go. A circle around the gold contact point would have helped. Also, kudos to Matt McCaffrey for his detailed comment as to the clips placement.
My Advice
Buy a magnifying glass with attached light..really helps
Read the comments.
Buy a plastic parts tray at a crafts store. That way, you can keep the parts from each step in a separate bin.
I ultimately discovered that the could be enlarged on my iPad which was a huge help.
Take your time and don't panic. People with less expertise have successfully done the job.
One Comment
I also replaced the docking port which is what consumed the majority if the time.
