My Problem
OS-X no longer booted from internal drive. But when I took the internal drive out and put it into a external enclosure, it booted fine via Firewire. This circumstance indicates a failed hard drive cable.
My Fix
Repair went smoothly and quickly.
My Advice
This is my second MacBook Pro in which the hard drive cable failed. And both cables failed just under 3 years after I bought the MBPs new. I'm very curious how/why a glued down internal cable that doesn't get appreciable mechanical movement would fail to begin with. Certainly there are enough failures of this particular cable to warrant iFixit stocking them. So I'm also very curious if others have had similar cable failures at just under 3 years after purchase new. Hey iFixit, you have the sales data for this cable and the MacBook Pro edition they were ordered for - do you see a trend?
