iPad 3 Wi-Fi Display Bezel Replacement

Very difficult

My Problem

Repairing broken front panel glass caused by iPad being dropped.

My Fix

I've repaired the front panel on this iPad twice now. The second time, I replaced the plastic bezel along with the front panel, which made the repair look much better.

I hit a couple problems both times.

1) Both times, I cleaned the screen before installing the glass. Both times, debris got in just as I was installing the glass. Double check that the screen is clean before you attach the glass in place.

2) Both times, the glass bulged out at the top because the camera bracket on the back side of the glass didn't fit into the holes on the camera. Next time, I'll press the glass into place from the top and double check that the bracket is in the correct place before pressing the glass into place. Both times, I had to pull the front panel glass off. This time, I couldn't get the bracket into place at all. I ended up removing the bracket from the glass, placed it on the camera, then pressed the glass into place after double-checking that the camera was centered in the clear portion of the glass. I scratched the black coating in the process, so there are scratches under the glass near the camera now.

This second install looks much better; replacing the bezel made a huge difference. I was also careful to clean off adhesive and tape from the case after disassembly

My Advice

Removing the tape and adhesive residue required a bunch of scrubbing; I used alcohol and goo-gone for the cleaning, but a little fiberglass / brass brush for electronics cleaning was most effective.
