The screen was shattered.
My Fix
The repair was easier than I expected, since the assembly already had all the major components. Changing out the biometric reader was easier than I thought it would be. I saved $120. by doing it myself, rather than having it repaired at a retail store or repair facility. the insurance deductible for iPhone is $199, so I save $50 bucks there by repairing it myself. It is helpful to order the tools with the screen but I already had them from a previous repair.
My Advice
Cover broken screens with wide shipping tape so you can use a suction cup to lift the screen.
