My Problem
The old battery was no longer staying charged.
My Fix
I had been told by a friend who had asked a salesperson that it was "too complicated" to replace the battery and that I would have get a new phone. I figured the most I could lose by trying iFixit's kit was $20. I'm a technophobe, which is why I still have my iPhone 4 while most people have upgraded several times. I watched a good 10-minute video called "How to Easily Replace an iPhone 4 battery" twice before attempting the repair with iFixit's cute little kit. It wasn't very complicated, didn't take long, and it worked! I was very proud of myself! And I agree that we have the right to fix our devices rather than keep buying new ones, so I did "liberate" my phone by using normal screws provided in the kit to replace the penta screws that the manufacturer had used to try to make it difficult to get into the phone, which was not nice.
My Advice
Don't believe everything you hear from salespeople...
