My Problem
My classic iPod would no longer take a charge.
My Fix
I ordered the 4th generation iPod battery replacement kit from iFixit and then proceeded to review the iFixit battery replacement procedures. This included all of the included sports that were included in the procedure. The basic theme that ran through the included notes was that the case was going to be stubborn the open. After destroying the edge onto plastic openers, I went to a 3mm jeweler's blade screwdriver and the case opened like I had said "Open seseme". It took about ten frustrating minutes before I resorted to the screw driver. Once it was open the battery was out in about another five minutes. The battery problem was very evident at that point. It had failed from overheating, the sides were bulged out. I placed the disassembled iPod in a container and waited for the battery from iFixit. Once the battery arrived it took less than fifteen minutes to reassemble the iPod with the new battery. This whole thing had coma about because my wife want Christmas music in the kitchen while she was making Thanksgiving dinner. Next it connected the iPod to iTunes (12) on my Mac and reprogram it. Well the iPod was full and iTunes refused to recognize it. I searched the internet for ideas and after several failed attempts I ran across an Apple Club article "Forcing an iPod to Restore" It started withe the caution "If your next set is throwing you iPod out, try this". It worked like champ!!! Within thirty minute I connected it back to iTunes and was greeted with "Welcome to iTunes" and being promote to select what music I wanted to put on it. The process restored the iPod to its out of the box configuration and I was able to load only the Christmas playlist and a couple of others. The iPod is operating and resending like it did when I bought it ten years ago. And, wifey had and has her Christmas music in her kitchen. Some days it is good to be a hero.
My Advice
Read carefully before putting any tools in your hand and be persistent looking for solutions. The use of a small screw driver to split the case was in one of the added notes attached to the iFixit procedure. The world will have to wait for this paper weight.
