My Fix
Got the Ifixit battery replacement kit -- watched the YouTube video which showed the battery being replaced step by step. The only problem I had replacing the battery was that I could not get a 3G signal. I went back to YouTube watched another video that included a step for cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol .... took the new battery out ... cleaned contacts with the rubbing alcohol.... put battery back and next thing I knew I was sitting back having drinking alcohol and the phone was working great and the battery was holding its charge.

My Advice
Clean contacts with rubbing alcohol when replacing battery.
