My Problem
We acquired this Mac as part of a business purchase. Drive went dead out of the blue, no warning, shortly after we took over.
My Fix
Spent a little time puzzling out which Mac I owned, and whether it was held together by magnets or sticky foam. Got the foam bits from iFixit and the drive from Amazon. The splitting tool included with new tape worked great. Had the whole repair done in less than 45 minutes and under $100.
My Advice
I'm an experienced PC tech working on a Mac for the first time. The apparent "no user serviceable parts inside" Mac ethos and nearly indistinguishable models are...different.
Although replacing the sticky foam was spendy and time-consuming compared to other possible techniques, I appreciate the clean, compact beauty of the method. The old foam residue was still so sticky that with some minor repair it probably would have held things together again without being replaced...but I'm glad I did.
Manipulating the video connectors requires small, deft hands and/or a great deal of patience. Having an assistant during the screen remove/reattach stage is very helpful.
How-to instructions/videos here and elsewhere were indispensable, and allow a confident novice to easily perform this repair.
