iPhone 4S Screen Replacement

1 - 2 hours

Difficult

My Problem

Decided my mom needed an upgrade from her 3GS, so decided to buy an iPhone 4S for her. Bought one with broken screen and back glass for cheap. Got a new back glass for $5 on eBay and this kit and fixed it up. Now she has a phone that cost me less than $75 and a gift made with love.

My Fix

The repair was relatively painless. Went much better than the DSi XL that is still defunct on my workbench. Took me about an hour. Had a little hiccup when I put everything back together -- the display was not coming on and a repeating "ding" sound would play (same one that plays when you plug your phone into power). Opened the phone back up and redid the dock connector cable and display cables, put everything back together, and I was good to go.

My Advice

I don't trust myself with remembering which screw goes where or even with differentiating between 1.5 and 1.3 mm. So I made a Post-It note for every step that required taking off a part and placed the items on each one in approximate arrangement of how they would go back (e.g., screw #1 in upper corner, screw #2 in middle, etc.). In other words, take your time, organize, and make sure you have enough space.

Make sure the cables snap into place correctly. Sometimes, you might hear a "click" and think it's in there right, but double check by trying to move it with the spudger.
