My Problem

Both my wife and myself had cracked the screens on our iPhone 5s (second time for me, these things are just not as sturdy as the old 4). The first time I took it to a repair shop that charged $150 to fix. This time around I decided to do it myself and save some money. Fixed mine first to make sure I was capable and after everything worked ordered the parts to fix my wife's phone.

My Fix

Pretty easy repair. The instructions are ok but if you need more detailed information youtube is full of it. Everything came apart and went back together as it should have.

My Advice

Don't be scared. You aren't doing any fabrication or recreating the wheel. Your just unscrewing little tiny screws and popping off some small ribbon cables. Do be mindful of how everything came apart and try to keep the associated screws with the associated parts.

The hardest part is getting the phone open but a razor blade helps to pry it open. All the instructions make it sound as if the ribbon cables are going to rip apart with the slightest touch but that is a bit of an exaggeration. They are small and I imagine more fragile than your standard computer ribbons but so long as you aren't hamfisted and jerking things around you should be fine. For me the hardest part was getting the phone opened but a razor blade used for the initial prying was very helpful. Once everything has been transferred over to the new screen but before you snap it back into place I would suggest turning the phone on and making sure everything is working as it should.

After fixing two phones I will soon be ordering new screens for the old 4s as back up. And should anything else need repairing on my phone I now know I am fully capable of doing the job. I would suggest the basic tool kit as it includes everything you need to get the job done.

Good luck and remember if small Chinese kids can assemble it you can too.
