My Problem
my iPhone 5s was 18 months old, and the touch screen had about 20% dead areas. I took it to the Apple Store and they recommended a screen and digitizer replacement for about $130 and that may or may not solve the problem.
My Fix
I have repaired and/or upgraded my apple computers for years, so checked IFixit to see how hard this would be. Medium difficulty? so why not try. I waited until Saturday morning to try it, so I could still have the phone for work, and that was good, it took nearly an hour for me with my 65 year old eyes (I had to use my wife's 'reading glasses" to see the tiny parts, and slowly took each step at a time. I laid out a large white sheet of paper to put all the parts, and wrote the "step #" next to the parts.
My Advice
definitely organize your work area, have plenty of light and allow enough time so you don't feel rushed.
