iPhone 4S Battery Replacement

10 - 30 minutes

Moderate

My Problem

The problem: I followed the advice of a page published by CNet on the internet on how to replace your for iPhone 4S battery for $8. The suggestion was go on eBay, save money. I then followed the video instructions linked to in that article on how to do the battery swap.

My Fix

Actually the 1st replacement went as smoothly as dealing with screws that are maybe 1/64th of an inch with the tools that were not magnetized. However when I checked the battery with an app that reports the condition the supposedly new 2680mAH battery had 308 load cycles and showed a maximum of capacity of 1429mAH. And I found the replacement held it's charge for a shorter time than my iPhone's 2.5 year old battery.

I emailed the company. They did come up with a full refund asking I not give them any negative reviews on eBay. Then I went looking on DuckDuckGo and found iFixIt's site.

My Advice

Advice: save yourself the extra hassle of replacing a cheap replacement. Take a look at the pictures I've provided. ($8. battery on left; iFixIt battery on right.) The $8. replacement was near the end of it's life cycle. The iFixIt replacement had only one load cycle which results from testing as a new battery should. And the tools were magnetized which aided tremendously.
