iPhone 5 Screen Replacement

15 minutes - 1 hour

Moderate

My Problem

The battery life on this phone sucked. So I tried replacing the battery. Unfortunately, I shattered the screen in the attempt to take it off. I therefore had to pick up the display assembly and install it at the same time as the new battery.

My Fix

It was tricky. I was really careful when pulling the battery up and took a while to do it. It seems to be working right now, which is Hallelujah.

My Advice

When putting the display assembly back on, make sure you start from the top! Get a friend to help you or rig some way of holding the display assembly up while you work on the ribbon cables and the bracket.

Also, think carefully before deciding to do this repair at all: consider whether an hour or two or your time is worth an extra $50 to you and a few days without the phone (the time it would take to have Apple do the job). It might not be, or you might just love to fix things-- more power to you! I wound up spending more money and being without this phone for longer than if I had sent it to Apple.

I'm the only one to blame for botching the first repair attempt but I would just encourage people to be informed about the challenges of fixing.
