My Problem

My wife's 3-year old Iphone 3g had a very weak battery, and I wanted to use the phone for myself. It should be simple to change the battery, right??...

My Fix

I was intimidated by the small delicate parts and the multistep procedure, but was determined that Apple would not be allowed to benefit from what looked like their design intended to force early obsolescence and purchase of a new phone. The friendly Apple repair store (only one in the area) wanted $100 for a new, installed battery ("last one we have"). I got it done in 1 and 1/2 hours at a cost of $25 including shipping and tools. That is $50 per hour net gain. I admit the job is not for the faint-hearted, and maybe was worth experiencing the angst on the basis of principle only.

My Advice

I am not tech savvy, but I read the procedure and the comments twice, and there were some very good and vital tips. First of all, it is important to be methodical and double-check the steps. It is easy for a small connector ribbon to be trapped under a larger piece during assembly. The magnetized screwdriver of perfect size provided in the kit was essential to someone whose fingers were too large to pick up the screws. The plastic "spudder" was also perfect for the job. (A butter knife proved more appropriate for removing the battery, even after heating it with an air-dryer as recommended). Also the tip of keeping the screws on the back of a refrigerator magnet sheet was perfect! I can imagine that those 14 year old girls in China with small and dexterous fingers have no problem assembling the phone, but I was "pushing the envelope" trying to use my own fat fingers for the job. It was great having detailed instructions and exactly the right tools. I felt so heroic (and relieved) when I got the phone buttoned back up and everything worked!! Perhaps the best advice was from my sister- she showed me her Motorola phone and all she needs to do the change the battery is pop off the back cover and pop in a new battery! But where is the challenge in that??
