My Problem
I plugged a lightning cable in one day and it wouldn't read it. Thought it was the aftermarket cable so I tried a bunch more. When a genuine apple branded cable didn't work I knew something was up. Peering inside I had broke a pin in the jack and a bunch more were loose. Battery is only part charged? Time for emergency surgery.
My Fix
Rough. Oh the first time was easy. I used a shortcut to avoid taking the battery and the main board out. Put everything back in, buttoned it up, and made a test call. "You sound really muddy" says my roommate. Looking at the removed part I missed the rubber microphone holder/waveguide. So popped it back open (much easier this time) and put the rubber piece on. Since I also had the battery I decided might as well do the battery so I don't have to do it again. Battery swap went well, put it all back together, turned it on, no LTE. So back open again to find that I had bumped the U.FL connecter near the screen's connections (had taken that off while doing the battery) and it was unplugged. After sticking that back down and putting it back together the 3rd time everything worked as it should. Hard? No. Just finicky
My Advice
The photos of the replacement dont mention the rubber microphone guide but make sure you move that over from the old to the new if it doesn't have it. Also you can skip a bunch of steps if you are willing to get creative with the speaker removal. Not hard just tricky. The iFixIt guide is the most conservative and safest route.
