My Problem
The rest of the unit was in good shape and as this was a 64GB Retina a repair seemed like a good idea. I have years of experience and felt I could handle the repair so I could give the repaired unit to my niece.
My Fix
The iFixit heater pad and guitar picks worked great to clean up the glass. Had a rough time getting the small FPC style connectors seated. Finally got everything working and then ripped the FPC flat cable at the new touch screen (lower part) destroying the replacement part. My fault totally, just wasn't clear how delicate the cables are. Trying to decide to spend another $80 on another part.
My Advice
This is not an easy repair (as iFixit states). Seating the FPC cables (there are two of them) is challenging. The key thing is they REALLY have to be pushed in for everything to work properly. There is a white line on the cable and this has to be flush with the connector. There is NO leeway.
